10 DIYs to Help Save Energy Over Christmas

Here’s a list of 10 DIYs to help keep your home warm and cozy this Christmas. There are many ways to help preserve energy in your home regardless of whether your home is a new build or an older home. The main benefit is spending less money on your domestic energy bills to keep your home warm. Did you know 40% of the UK’s carbon emissions come from our homes? These tips will also help you reduce your environmental impact. The two necessities are insulation and draught-proofing. Even if you aren’t big on DIY there are some really quick and easy suggestions in this list as well.

1 – Wrap your pipes with lagging

A simple and easy way of making the most of your hot water is by wrapping your pipes with lagging, which is available to buy in most DIY stores. You slip the lagging over your pipes once it’s been cut down to size. This will also help prevent your pipes from freezing during the winter.

2 – Hang thick curtains

Curtains are more important than just being decorative. If you have good quality thick curtains or even thermal lined ones they can help reduce your energy bills and cut your energy consumption by up to 15%. Keep your curtains closed especially at night you can even tape them at the edges, just ensure there’s no split in the middle when they’re drawn.

3 – Don’t neglect your floors

An area that can be causing a lot of heat loss is your floors especially ground floors or floors over garages and open spaces that aren’t usually heated. We have a kit specifically for this problem. the EcoTec Floor-Foam Insulation Kit which blocks any draughts from coming up through the floors. This can be used under most flooring including carpet, wood, laminate, underlay, and vinyl.

4 – Remove draughts from the front door

A great way of preventing draughts which are often overlooked is simply adding a letterbox brush or a keyhole cover to your front door. They’re inexpensive, quick, and easy to install.

5 – Maximise radiator efficiency

Make sure you’re keeping your radiators clean, dust build-up in your radiators can make it difficult for heat to escape. Each winter it’s a good idea to bleed your radiators so they can heat your home quickly. We also have an EcoTec Radiator Insulation Kit which will stop the heat from your radiators from going through the wall and escaping outside.

6 – Prevent heat loss through your roof

Did you know you can lose around 25% of the heat you’re paying for through your roof? This is why we designed ours Under Rafter Insulation Kit.  It prevents heat loss through your roof and cold air from entering your home. This will lower your heating costs and you’ll see a return on your investments every year.

7 – Install a chimney balloon

As long as your fireplace isn’t used for open-lit fires or stoves you can use a chimney balloon which prevents the hot air from escaping and cold draughts from entering your home. It can easily be removed if you ever want to install a working fire.

8 – Install a hot water tank jacket

Have you thought about insulating your hot water tank? Your hot water tank can lose up to three-quarters of its heat if you don’t have one. The insulation works by slowing down heat transfer due to its multilayer make-up, the multifoil will also repel away the cold.

9 – Check for gaps in your floorboards

One of the best energy-saving suggestions for owners of older homes is to fill the spaces between the flooring. Old floorboards give a room character, but it’s amazing how much heat can escape via the spaces between them. When added together, this can be the equivalent of leaving a small window open all the time. Additionally, you can install our EcoTec FloorFoam Insulation Kit which can be used under most flooring including, carpet, laminate, wood, underlay, and vinyl. This will help prevent draughts and around 15% of energy.

10 – Insulate your loft floor

A great way of preventing heat loss is by insulating your loft floor here we have a Loft Floor Insulation Kit which doesn’t contsin any nasty, itchy fiberglass and without raising the floor height, keeping your loft storage boards in place. At 6mm thick when compressed EcoQuilt Expert is equivalent to around 100mm of Fibre Glass and also helps retain heat by reflecting into your home. You can also use a double layer to reflect even more heat!
